Anyhoo, I saw an Easter Table set-up & was really taken by the place settings. Mind you, I don't know what you do with all the accoutrements when you actually sit down to eat. But I do love the way it looks!

They also had cute egg-shaped Bunny Plates. My daughter loves to paint pottery. Maybe we could design something similar?

Whew! I have been meeting myself going & coming! Don't know how I get myself booked up like this sometimes. I really am trying to do better, but...

This post is going to be a potpourri.

My Business
I had a great Tupperware party last night. The host and most of the guests were young moms. Out of 10 girls, 6 had never attended a Tupperware party! Most said they didn't really cook. Hard for me to imagine! How do you raise a family without cooking? Fast food? I am determined to change that.

My "Busy Mom's Cooking Class" taught them how to cook a whole Rotisserie-Style chicken in the microwave, in 30 minutes or less. The result, tasty & moist chicken, ready for tacos, chicken Caesar salad, fajitas, you name it! My very favorite part of my business is the teaching aspect.

Fun
My sister and her son and another nephew (+ two rambunctious dogs) will be here this weekend. It will be a houseful, but I am going to love it. My sister & I both belong to the wine club at a local winery very near us. We will need to go tasting, for sure! I am thinking about making Cincinnati Chili for the crowd. We'll see. BBQ'd tri-tip is so much easier! :)

I Forgot....

Yesterday morning, our Friday Friends Bible Study resumed after the Holiday break. I can't tell you how happy I was that we were meeting again! Missed this time with my dear friends.

As the co-leader of the study, about a week ago I sent out an email reminder for the study. I suggested that we start off with a time of fellowship and a breakfast potluck. Remember that fact. Everyone like that idea, so fun and food was the plan.

Fast forward to Friday morning. I get up and begin preparing for the day, when I suddenly remember, POTLUCK! Great. It is 6:30 am & I need to be on the road by 8:45 am. No time to go to the grocery. (I live way out of town.) What do I have in the house? Can I prepare something edible? I need to make something that has protein, so that I'm sure we don't have only fruit & muffins.

To the pantry & fridge I go....

8 eggs, 4 slices of bacon, half a package of cheese, is not enough for a regular size frittatas.

Ah, but I do have my silicone baking form that will create individual, smaller frittatas.

Whip up those eggs with some Italian seasoning. Since I was out of milk, I also added some sour cream.

Layer the cooked bacon in the mold.

Top with a sprinkling of cheddar cheese.

Ladle in the egg mixture. (Barely had enough.)

Bake for 25 minutes at 375 deg.

Ta Dah! "Breakfast Bites" are born!

Can you believe I forgot my own potluck? Ugh. Here's the real kicker, when I arrived at Bible study, there were 3 other egg dishes. LOL! DO you ever do that kind of stuff?

One More Holiday Photo

I wanted to post one last Holiday photo. This is me, second from the left, and 3 of my TW friends, all "blinged out" at our TW Holiday party. The reason for this photo is two-fold.

First, I want a record of what I look like now. I am seriously going to get some weight off this year! There will be more posts about THAT subject as the year progresses, I'm sure!

Second, and most importantly, I want a visible reminder of what a really awesome day that was. I earned it as a reward for my efforts in my business. I loved it! I want that again!

You see, I have failed myself, my family, my team and my company. I have gone from my highest high, to a new low. I start this month with only one active consultant on my team. I am no longer in leadership in our organization. My self-esteem and my income are in the tank, folks! Worst part, I let it happen. Darn!

I will be using this photo to help me stay on track to rebuild. Kind of like "muscle memory", the feelings of that day, the recognition, the fun, the feeling of accomplishment, I hope will carry me through some challenging days ahead!

I'll probably be talking Tupperware a little more than I have previously. Not as a sales pitch, but as an integral part of my life. This is my livelihood, and I need to get it right, again! If you are offended or turned off by such talk, I apologize, and ask you to bear with me. Being able to write my thoughts here, is going to be a help to me. I hope you'll chime in when you have something to say. That will help me too!

Okay, enough of that! Let's all get on with the challenges and fun that life has for us in 2012!

This past Wednesday was our RazzMaTazz (Tupperware) Sales Organization's Year-end Luncheon. I love a good party, and this was the BEST I've attended in a long time! Twelve (yes, 12!) hours of celebration & recognition! Every minute from 11 am to 11 pm was packed with so much fun, I am still smiling about it!

My dear friend and Director, Stephanie, had a jam-packed day planned for us! This woman is a fabulous leader, generous beyond belief, and she loves each of us unconditionally! Steff opened her home to us and she knows how to entertain! How could we NOT have a wonderful day?

The day was planned like this:

First, Leadership Luncheon for 26 of us! We brought the appetizers, Steff and her husband provided a Prime Rib lunch. Yum!

Here's my contribution to the appetizers. Individual shrimp cocktails in TW Midgets. These are so easy and great for a mix & mingle party.

Here are a couple of photos of Steff's living room set up for lunch.

Next, we had individual recognition. I recieved one of three "Partier of the Year" awards. It was a sparkly pin, which I'll show in a later photo. We also had a gift exchange and an auction. Steff awards "Miss Moneybags" cash to us throughout the year for our achievements. Then, at the year end party we get to spend it on items she collects for us.

The next two photos are of the auction tables.

I bid on & won the wine chiller and a gift basket of bath products. I still have auction bucks to start out the new year, too!

Next on the agenda, for 12 of us, was a Shopapalooza! We won the opportunity to shop (with Steff's money) as a reward for sales and recruiting during August. We met at a local outdoor shopping galleria, split into 2 teams, of six each. I was captain of one team, chosen by random drawing. Each team was given $150 dollars to spend on 6 gifts, in two hours. We had to shop for things that represented the word "DREAMS", and make up a skit to go with them. The team who spent the closest to $150 without going over "won". My team did it! We spent $149.52, the other team spent $149.23...close, eh? Let me tell you, it is NOT easy to get 6 women to agree on 6 gifts. It is a lot of fun, though!

At the end of the 2 hours, we met at a restaurant in the galleria for appetizers and drinks, AND to have Steff draw names for the gifts we had just purchased. I told you she was generous! After each team did their little skit to show what they had purchased, tickets were pulled and when your name was called, you got to choose from any of the 12 gifts. No photos, sorry. My camera decided to run out of juice, and I didn't think of my phone. :(

Finally, Steff handed us all movie tickets to see "New Years Eve" at the theater around the corner! We all piled into the cars rushed to make the next show. What a great movie! The story was wonderful. As it unfolded, more stars kept showing up!

I had the most fabulous day! And I certainly had a bunch of stuff to haul home!

Here are my goodies. I am so thankful to be part of a business and sales team that treats me so well!

First thing you'll notice is that I can't hold the camera still. My camera is so old, I guess it doesn't have that auto-focus feature? Second I didn't pay too much attention to the composition. See the electrical cord by the plant stand? I should have tucked it away.

All in all, this is the first time I have been even THIS successful. I am determined to learn! Maybe a new camera is in order. 'Tis the season, you know...

Busy Week!

It all started with our RazzMaTazz Tupperware Holiday Cooking School on Monday night. About three times a year, our sales organization presents a cooking school as a thank you to our hosts, customers & the public.

We have idea tables (gift ideas, new recipes, etc.) and tasting stations before the program begins. Then, after everyone has arrived & is registered, we proceed with demos for several recipes.

I prepared most of the food for tasting and did the main cooking demo. I've added a few photos of the evening. I don't have a photo of my demo, but it was recorded and will turn up on YouTube, eventually. I'll let you know when it does, if you care to see it. :)

I taught Investment Cooking, making Stuffed Bell Peppers from our Basic Beef Freezer Mix. The idea of investment cooking is to "invest" a few extra $$ grocery shopping, and a few hours on a weekend to prepare a basic beef or chicken freezer mix, which provides 6-8 meals during the month.

Sunday Sermon

It's a busy time of year!

Yesterday, I had a conversation about "busy-ness "with my daughter. I was busy finishing the Christmas decorations, and she was cutting out her 5th sewing project for the season. She had her school's staff party to attend last night, I have my Tupperware Cooking School Demo to prepare for Monday night. My daughter, like her mother is prone to over-extending herself!

I have to admit, that neither of us was feeling the JOY. How easy is it to get off track; to lose sight of the meaning of this season? I, (we) should know better!

I have a little Hallmark book titled "God Always Has a Plan B". I often turn to it for inspiration, and as part of my quiet time. I was drawn to it this morning, and landed on the chapter "for providing rest for the weary". Imagine that? Amazing, our God!

The page begins with a quote by Thomas à Kempis, "First, keep peace within yourself; then you can also bring peace to others".

As I read on, I was reminded by the author, that to be at my best, to be healthy, to truly enjoy life, I must make time to rest my body, mind and spirit! Five hours of sleep, no exercise, and a distracted 10 minutes of devotional time aren't going to do it!

Come to me, all you who are

weary and burdened,

Christmas Mantel

I am posting a (lousy) photo of my mantel shelf. There are just a few minutes during the day, when the light is just right, where you can see the candle glow & the the other stuff on the shelf. I was in a hurry...

I have had my digital camera for years, and still don't know how to use it. :( Obviously. I thought I was taking a photo, but I was actually using the video feature. Duh! My daughter was able to capture a shot from the video, and that is what you see here. Tomorrow, I will post again, with a better photo & the decor on the chest below it. I should have the rest of the decor done by then too.

I wanted to thank you all for the opinions you gave me! In the end, I added the greenery, etc. below the shelf & that helped a lot. As you can see, I did leave the squirrel & the deer. We live in the country, and these critters are our real life visitors every day. Also, the patterns on the red transferware are country scenes.

Opinions, please?

Is that a dangerous request? :)

I need help with a couple of things. First, below are a couple of photos of some things I purchased recently. The bird plates came from Tuesday Morning, and cost only $3.99 each! Score! I have a place for them, just need to get them put up.

Here's a close up of the cute little bottles. I purchased them from Nell Hill's a while back. Not exactly sure where I'll be using them, but I do want them in this year's Christmas decor.

The one with the bow came with a sheet music scroll in side. I'm wondering if I should fill the others with something? If so, what would that be? It would have to be small, since the openings are small. I was thinking pearls or crystals. Maybe tiny evergreens or berries would work?

What do you think? Yes, I really want to know.

Now for dilemma #2. I am working on my mantel shelf (no fireplace). I am not done yet, but I keep looking at it and something is wonky. It might be the swag. Is it not big enough? I love the purple-reddish bow, but it might be too dark? I have a more greenery, lights, a fabric banner (which I am still Sewing) to add to the bottom. Just can't get past this point.

Again, I want to know what you think. I know all you creative gals are going to have some great ideas. Bring 'em on! Please...

Our church women's ministry held its annual Christmas dinner on Friday night. We had a wonderful time of fellowship & fun. The theme of the evening was "Christmas Presence".

The skit was a reminder that the true present of Christmas is God's Presence, given to us as a baby born in a stable; Emmanuel, "God with us"!

Napkin Folding, Christmas Style

Disclaimer: The color of the napkins used here, should be reversed. The red napkin which should be the flower (Poinsettia) was not sturdy enough to hold it's shape. Of course, I had no spray starch, which helps immensely! So, just use your imagination and pretend, ok? :)

These are two very easy napkin folds, combined. The leaves are a Pinwheel fold. Instructions HERE. The flower is the Lotus or Rose fold, which I pulled up to form deeper petals. Instructions HERE. Add a lighted votive and...

Now, MY Project

I originally scheduled last weekend's trip to Angel Quilters in order to get some advice from the very creative & knowledgeable women who work there. As you know from my last post, we accomplished some shopping for my daughter too! I was able to spend a few minutes with the gals, and got my questions answered.

Yesterday, I began my project. It started with old fabric samples that I used in my redecorating business. I have about 20 books and rings of these swatches, all color coordinated. Doesn't this look like a project just waiting to happen?

I spent most f the afternoon, laying and re-laying the swatches into a design that I thought was just right. The future recipient of this soon-to-be "throw" decorates with lots of green, so I mostly used those swatches, adding in rosy-pinks & some blues.

I am telling you, this was definitely the hardest part! First, I am a very novice quilter. I have made clothing for myself, sewed slipcovers & drapes, pillows, etc. Laying out a "crazy quilt" is another thing entirely! I'll have to add several rows & columns as I get the swatches cut to remove the metal ring and stiff paper at each end. Then, there will be more editing of the colors/layout.

When I finally quit working on it after supper, it looked like this.

Guess how I am spending my day? :) I am actually having fun with this, and who knows what I might think of to use the rest of the swatches!

Handmade; From the Heart!

Sunday, I spent a very pleasant afternoon helping my daughter make a Christmas gift! She is an accomplished knitter, painter of pottery & quite a good cook. Seamstress, not so much!

I posted previously about visiting my favorite Quilt Shop for some project supplies. Melissa decided to ride along. While we were in the shop, she saw an apron that she loved. She decided she could make these as gifts that would be useful and pretty. "Will you help me Mom?"

How could I resist? It was fun to coach her through the process. Way back when, she took sewing in school, and has made a couple of things through the years. So, I really only needed to be nearby to answer questions and help her get familiar with my sewing machine.

I love the fabric she chose, and the the apron turned out very well, don't you think?

Now, I'd better get busy on my project before she walks in with the fabric for more aprons! The 'ole sewing machine is gonna get a workout this Christmas! :)

What On Earth...?

I simply cannot believe it! Turn on the TV or log on to the computer this weekend, and you are assaulted with pictures and stories of unprecedented greed!

Just a few hours after a day dedicated to thanksgiving for our true abundance, we hear about near-riots over $2 toasters, and of a woman who used pepper spray to keep fellow shoppers from grabbing the game console she coveted! Shoppers have been shot, trampled, and mugged in parking lots as the head home with their spoil.

Today, one of the online headlines asked, "Has Black Friday Gone Too Far?". Do we really need to ask that question? Is it not obvious?

Look, I realize that things are tough economically. I lost my full time job last May. I hardly see that as an excuse to endanger myself & my fellow humans in order to shop! I have determined that we will give within our budget, and that is going to require some creativity on my part. I accept that challenge.

I am just so distressed by this stuff! I need to tune out most of the media for now. Christmas music...yeah, that's the idea!

I'm glad it's Sunday. Heading for church in a couple of hours will help me to regain my joy, and to worship the "giver of all good things"! I need it!

Daughter & I are off to my favorite Quilt Shop for supplies to start a project. More on that to follow in a day or two...

Our afternoon will be spent stowing the Fall decor and starting the Christmas decorating! I enjoy doing it, and I love sitting in the glow of the results!

Birthday Dinner

My wonderful daughter always cooks my birthday dinner, since I really prefer to celebrate at home. (I'm not fond of being serenaded by bored wait staff, or wearing the silly birthday hat!) As always, it was delicious! Just as I sat down, I remembered I should take a photo. My camera was in the office, but my cell phone was near by. Unfortunately, the color is rather washed out. The salmon was really pink & the green beans were much brighter...

I saw this product on the Crate & Barrel website, and thought what a wonderful gift this would be for a Thanksgiving host.

Then, I decided that I could make a gift like this myself. I have several recipes for those "soup in a jar" mixes. You know, the ones where you layer ingredients in a mason jar and attache preparation instruction

Chris' HolidayLeftover Soup

1 (2.75 ounce)package country gravy mix (regular or no-fat)
1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules
2 teaspoons dried minced onion
2 teaspoons dried celery flakes
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1/4 cup uncooked wild rice
1 cup uncooked white rice
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped dried mushrooms
(shiitake, chanterelle or oyster)

2 cups chopped orshredded turkey; to be added at cooking time

Pour gravy mix into wide-mouth pint jar. In small bowl, stir together bouillongranules, onion, celery and parsley. Pour into jar to make second layer. Addlayers of wild rice, white rice and mushrooms. Seal with lid. Attach gift tag (below) and decorate jar as desired.

Attach a gift tag with the following instructions:
Holiday Leftover Soup:
Empty contents of jar into a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Add 7 cupswater; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes oruntil rice is tender, stirring occasionally. Add leftover turkey to just warmthrough. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
Makes 6 servings.

I made something similar last year. It's good to have a few around for those unexpected, drop-in guests who bring gifts!

Winnerfest and a recipe!

In the Tupperware world, there's been Springfest, Summerfest, Fallfest and Winterfest. Four times a year, several Tupperware organizations from Northern California & Nevada get together for a night of recognition, celebration & training. T

These events help us to launch the upcoming selling season, by showing us new product & catalogs, the gifts for hosts, consumer specials, and (fun, fun, fun!) the trips, and gifts that we as consultants can earn.

Because our new motto for 2012 in "WIN", Work It Now, this event was renamed Winnerfest. :)

Last night, I had the privilege of being a trainer and host of a "Discovery Table". I thought you might like to see a few photos.

My table theme was :

I am very aware that our Hosts "gift" us with time in their homes and by inviting their friends. It is important to me that I return value to them. My party demo is my gift in return. Tupperware sells itself. If folks come to a party, they are likely expecting to buy. I want to give hints, tips & recipes using our products and systems that can really make a difference in their kitchens. Save them time, or money or both...

So, my table was all about taking the products that are featured in the current sale flyer, and showing how we can add value to our demos by featuring them.

One of my favorite products on the table is the Heat 'N Serve. These containers go from the fridge or freezer, right to the microwave for reheating. There is a automatic venting system that prevents blowout! Ever have something explode all over the nuker? Yuck! The containers are also attractive enough to set on the table for serving.

Using these containers, you can create a basic beef or basic chicken mix, in your microwave or on the stove top, that can be turned into 8 different meals. Stick 'em in the fridge or freezer and you've got quick dinners for 8 of your busiest day in December! The demo includes a cookbook with both basic mixes and recipes for using them.

I think of all the ideas I taught, this was the favorite. Except for the Holiday Cranberry Salsa recipe. This is really delicious. Eat it with cinnamon tortilla chips, pour it over a block of cream cheese to serve with crackers, or use it as your cranberry dish for Holiday meals. I do all three!

Last time I was in my local grocery store, I picked up their magazine. I love this thing! I eagerly await its appearance each month, or is it each quarter? Hmmm, I can't remember...

Anyhoo, this issue is jam-packed with great recipes. It also has a lot of advertisements, but I really don't mind since the other content is so great, and it's FREE.

The Cellarette

Once, when I visited Filoli, I was curious about something I saw in the dining room. Standing on the floor, near the dining table, was a beautiful chest/box of some sort. I asked the docent about it. She said it was a "cellarette" for wine and champagne. I managed to get a half-decent photo of it from behind the velvet rope. I'm glad I did since it hasn't been on display in any visit since! I love the shape, the carvings & brass fittings on this one. In fact, I'd like to own one!

The Encyclopedia Britannica describes a cellarette as:

"cellarette, small, movable wine cooler and, later, also adeep, metal-lined tray with compartments for holding bottles in a sideboard.Most portable cellarettes were made of mahogany, and designs were varied, theshape governed to some degree by the shapes of wine bottles. Early wine bottleswere short and squat, but in the late 18th century they became progressivelytaller, a trend that was reflected in the depth of cellarettes.

Common varieties were circular oroval, hooped with brass bands, and provided with tapered, fluted legs withcastors. Usually kept under the centre of a sideboard or side table, they were rolled out for use. Under theinfluence of the classical revival in the late 18th and early 19th centuries,sarcophagus shapes were popular. I've searched the internet, and discovered that I only really like the antique cellarettes, and they are way out of my budget! So, I'll be content to admire them from afar!

A New Collection?

Okay, I'll admit it! I am a collector of stuff. I have collections that have cost me a few bucks. Blown-glass pumpkins, red transferware, teapots, depression glass, finials, roosters & hens (decorative types), Santas. None absolutely priceless, but there has been some investment over time. I love them, and I will continue to collect them.

But...

Lately, I have been drawn to a very inexpensive, easily sought & found item. What is this highly collectible item you ask?

Paper Napkins. Yes, I said, "Paper Napkins"! Not your everyday white, buy in bulk at Costco paper napkins either!

I started buying them to use for quick wipe ups out on the deck or take on picnics. How that all changed, I'm not sure.

Might have been the one below, found at Sur La Table. I actually laughed out loud in the middle of the store! You would have to know my family to understand why, but it is all good, I promise.

Just a few days ago, I found this one. Seasonally appropriate, don't you think?

This photo shows what is currently in my kitchen drawer.

I almost bought another package yesterday. Somehow, I resisted, but it was hilarious, and I'll probably go back for it.

Is it possible I am entering my dotage? I hope I'm just a collector who likes to have fun!

Halloween Fare

Because we live "out in the country", off a driveway that is 1/4 mile from the road, we NEVER have Trick or Treaters.

I always enjoyed answering the door on Halloween and seeing the little ghosts, goblins & princesses when we lived in the 'burbs. But to tell you the truth, it is nice not to have to guard our carved pumpkins to make sure the neighborhood ruffians don't smash them, or to answer the door at 9 pm to a bunch of large Goth-inspired teenagers.

Last night was a quiet one for us. After supper, more on that to follow, we had a couple of glasses of wine, and settled into a "Murder, She Wrote" marathon. I've always loved that program, and it was so much better than the blood & gore programs offered on some other channels!

Now, for supper...Yesterday, Marie at The English Kitchen posted a recipe for Baked Hot Dogs. I knew it would be a hit with my husband, and I enjoy a "dog" now and then myself. The photo below is mine. For a better photo and the recipe, go HERE.

My sweet husband helped me to figure out how much ribbon I need, which involved the "something" x Pi kind of stuff...yikes! So now I'm looking for the best place (that means cheapest) to purchase grosgrain ribbon. 144 yards are needed to be exact. Also need to decide what color I want. Red, green & white pretty much limits use to Christmas, or burgandy & evergreen colors, which I could use more often.

This is going to be a FUN project!

Something New!

Usually, when the UPS truck rumbles up our driveway, it means my husband has ordered some tractor part. Not today, the package was for me. Whoo Hoo!

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a Blessings Unlimited party at a girlfriend's home. The consultant showed so many wonderful items, that I had a tough time choosing what I wanted to purchase. I finally decided on something that I think I'll use all year long, but especially during the Holidays!

Here's a photo of my new lantern! It's about 18" tall, so it'll make quite the statement. I can't wait to get a new candle & something "fall-ish" to dress it up! I'm thinking it can sit in the middle of my dining room table, or maybe as part of a coffee table vignette.

Mushrooms, Toadstools, Fungus!

We had some rain & wind a couple of days ago. As you can see in the photo below, it sent my birdhouse into a bit of a lean!

This morning, I walked out to investigate what needs to be done to set the birdhouse aright. I also took my camera to show off my latest crop! They are inedible of course, but lovely in their own way. We often get "fairy rings" amongst our trees, but this is the largest collection yet! Some of the caps on these were almost 4" across.

My husband had started to kick a few of them over until I yelled "STOP"! Boys!

I almost forgot to look down as I walked. If I hadn't done so, I would have missed these little beauties. The caps range from dime to quarter size.

Rubber Bumpers

If you have brown, half-inch square, rubber bumpers on the back of any of your framed art...

Do not walk, RUN to remove them!

We were visiting family for 2 days. Having turned the air conditioner off to conserve energy, I imagine the inside temp may have reached the high 80's, at most.

This is what I found when we returned! It is a sticky, ugly, mess! I tried to use a little fingernail polish remover on a Q-Tip and it also removes the paint; of course it does! I might try "Goo Gone"?

I've been wanting to repaint my rooms, looks like the time is now! Ugh!

Flowers work as a convenient camouflage!

These bumpers have been on these art pieces for at least 15 years. I never imagined this could happen. I do know that the brown felt bumpers can also stain, so I use the white felt or clear acrylic bumpers now.

Fortunately, these two pieces are the only two that have the old bumpers. But when we owned our custom frame shop franchise, the brown rubber type were the ones recommended by our company. We used literally hundreds of them on customer's frames! I am praying that this has not happened to anyone else.

Today is National Gumbo Day, according to my Gallo Family calendar. I invited my friend Pat to have lunch, gumbo of course, to celebrate. I used a recipe I found on the Martha Stewart website, Half-Hour Chicken Gumbo. I also baked cornbread, from scratch, & Bumbleberry Blossoms, frozen from Safeway. Lunch was actually a snap!

I set the table with my Fall leaf plates, Polka Dot bowls...everything looked and tasted wonderful!

DID I GET JUST ONE PHOTO??? NO!!! NOPE!!! NADA!!!

I missed the photo of the table setting.
I missed the photo of Pat arriving.
I missed the photo of the piping hot gumbo.
I missed the photo of the deliciously browned cornbread.
I missed the photo of the Bumbleberry Blossom, served with cream poured over.
Perfect blog content, right?

Our Tupperware Organization holds several Cooking Schools each year. There are usually 6 - 8 tables where a consultant is doing a demo of a particular product and a dish made with that product. It's a fun way to show off what's new in Tupperware and give guests a chance to taste some great food.

At the last one, I was asked to demo our FridgeSmart® Containers and Chef Series™ Pro Knives. I had a blast looking at garnishing websites and tried to duplicate a few them. I certainly need more practice, but the result was adequate, at least. I do have to admit to being proud of that lobster. I decided at the last minute to do this one and didn't have the exact fruit on hand that was in the example online. Improvise, improvise!

I've used a few of these garnishes since and they do "guild the lily" for a special meal! Do you use garnishes when serving kitchen creations?

The Painted Lady

Several years ago, my husband gave me a beautiful bird house for Christmas. It has stood in our backyard for all this time, adding it's soft, shabby chic charm to the view. Although you can't really tell from this photo, it is painted white, soft gray & celadon green.

It has also been well-used. Every year, several pairs of Tree Swallows moved in and raised their families. It is a joy to watch.

Birdhouse, Last Spring

After several years, the birdhouse needed repainting. My husband took it down to check it for wasp nests (evil creatures) and said he would clean it up and paint it before placing it back on its pole.

True to his word, he did just that. When I returned from my weekend at our church Women's Retreat, he could hardly wait to show me that he had completed his task.

This is what I found!

His words to me were, "Doesn't it look just like a Victorian Painted Lady?". Bright orange, bright green & bright blue... I said, "Yes, babe; yes, it sure does!" I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and then took my luggage into the bedroom to unpack & compose myself.

By the time I was finished unpacking and walked out of the room, I was thankful not only for the newly painted birdhouse, but also for a husband who loves me & wants to give me the desires of my heart! (Obviously that retreat might have been good for me!)

Besides, in a couple of years, it will need to be painted again! :)

The Settee

I am a frequent visitor to our local Calico Corners fabric store. I can't get enough of the beautiful fabrics and the inspiration they give me. Last time I was there, I found just the settee I want for my family room. I walked around a display and there it was. Not only the size and shape I wanted, but fabric I adore! Colors, just right for my room. Birds, I love birds, especially in fabrics!

I took the photos below with my phone, then rushed home and showed them to my husband. He promptly said, "How many Tupperware parties is that?" Spoil sport...

I'm tempted to purchase the fabric, and hold on to it until I can afford the settee frame. Is that a dangerous idea?

I told you I was obsessed! :o)

One Thing Off The List

So that you will not think me a total sluggard, here's the rest of the story...

While switching out a mirror for a wreath isn't a difficult task, the logistics of this particular move proved to be a very lengthy process. See the beautiful buffet in the 2011 photo above? On Saturday morning, it was sitting in our garage. The buffet was given to me by a dear girlfriend who was down-sizing her home. Isn't she such a wonderful friend? It matches my dining room furniture in both color & style, and I absolutely cherish it.

My sister and her husband were here early on Saturday, so I saw a chance to get the buffet moved into the house. It's very heavy, and I have not wanted my husband to struggle with it. We got it moved in with a minimum of trouble...oh happy day!

You DO know what happens when a new piece of furniture enters a room, right? Things needs to be rearranged. The former small cabinet shown in the 2010 photo will be perfect on the opposite wall. That move will require changing the sofa's position. That move will require switching end tables. And.so.on.

There went my day! I'm still not done. Hopefully today. I'll have photos of the whole new arrangement and one showing off the buffet, next time.

Did I mention that the wreath was made for me by another girlfriend? I really do have the most wonderful friends!

To-Do List:
1. Place my pheasant feather wreath on the dining room wall.
2. Set out my pumpkin collection
3. Make a twig wreath. Thank you Vee!
4. Try Martha Stewart's idea for Earl Grey tea, steeped in hot apple cider. Maybe I'll wait until Sunday. :)

Hello Again!

It seems that my "hiatus" stretched far beyond May 1st, eh? I want to sincerely thank those of you who stopped by to check up on me! I did visit your blogs occasionally and even came here a few times intending to post.

But to tell you the truth, I couldn't really muster the gumption to begin. Have you ever been in that place?

I love blogging, but only if I can do it well. I'm not referring to my own writing, I'm no "writer". I'm a talker who puts those words on paper. What I mean by doing blogging well, is to be a participant in and contributor to the community of my blogging friends. I need to be able to post here, read other's blogs & comment consistently. That's what I need, not necessarily what blogdom requires.

I have been so busy, that making that commitment has been pretty scary. I am still working to build my Tupperware business, my husband had a serious episode of congestive heart failure (he's really good now) and I am serving in my church during a time of pastoral change. Whew!

However, the fact of the matter is, I miss being here and with all of you! I have come realize that this blog, your blogs are a joyful part of my day. We all need joy in our days. Sometimes when I write, it's a stream of consciousness kind of thing where I am actually working out something for myself. I need that. Other times, it is to share an idea, great find, post a glorious photo. I need that. Visiting you all has enriched my life in so many ways. I need that.

I'm posting today as a new beginning. I have challenged myself to get "with it" and reconnect with you all. And, by doing so, get back in touch with myself.

Along with that challenge, I'm going to try to cut myself some slack. I will post as often as I am able. If sometimes there isn't a fab photo or awesome idea, just my thoughts for the day...that's okay too!

Today, I DO have something to share! I found this "stamped curtain" project on the Lowes Creative Ideas project website.

Hi Everyone! Happy Spring!

As I told you HERE, I am in the middle of a career transition. At the end of April, my full-time corprate job will end and my full-time Tupperware job will begin. After having gone through ALL the possible emotions regarding this change at 62 years old, I can honestly say I am thrilled!

In the meantime, I have one job to finish and my YOB (your own business) to begin to ramp up. I am placing many things "on hold" until May 1st. Obviously, viewing the date of my last post, this blog is one of them. I will be back though! May 1st will be here before we know it.

I'll catch up with you then...

Two Weeks in February

One of the the many blessings of living in the country is the view out my kitchen windows. I can watch the neighbors cattle, my western bluebird families, tree swallows, humming birds, and assorted fury creatures, such as rabbits, squirrels (grrrr) and gophers (double-grrrr). Occasionally, I see a coyote or bobcat wander through the yard. And then there are the deer. Love 'em...hate 'em, depending on their appetite for my plants. LOL!

For two weeks in February, the critters are completely overshadowed. Our 40+ almond trees burst into bloom and we live in a white-flowered wonderland. The trees are scattered all over the property, so the "show" is everywhere, but especially outside my kitchen window.

I've taken a few photos to share. All but one is taken out my kitchen window. The other one, of our Almond Alleé was taken by my daughter. It is actually her backyard. (She also lives on our property.)

Please forgive the fact that I didn't straighten and stage the kitchen counters. :o(

Can't wait to get going on the herb garden there!

It is so lovely to have this wonderful reminder that Spring is right around the corner! Especially during the dull, grey days of February!

Wow! It's been half a month since I posted! Time sure gets away from you when you're having fun...NOT!

I am just about over the worst cold I can remember having in years! I suppose the intensity wasn't as bad as some, but 4 weeks into it and I am still coughing occasionally. I haven't felt like leaving the house for weeks. I even skipped the local Depression Glass Show; a real passion of mine! THAT is just how bad I felt.

To add to the misery of a cold, I found out during this time that I am going to lose my job! Yep, isn't that special?

I have been with this company for almost 15 years, surviving 2 acquisitions, and have never had anything but a very good (sometimes stellar) performance review.

After the first time the company was sold, the new company closed the plant in my town. I have been telecommuting (working from home) ever since. Now, 7 years later, we are being required to move to an office on-site. There is an office in my area, but I have to move to an office 3 hours away! I told them to go ahead & terminate me!

Why? We live in California. Thankfully in one of the "more affordable" areas. They want me to move to Silicon Valley, 3 hours away. I can't realistically afford to move there. I could drive there for 3 days a week and stay in a hotel, on my own dime. That would be a complete disruption of our lives. My husband is 72 years old and I am not leaving him for that often or for that amount of time.

So what am I going to do?

First, I'm trusting the Lord that this is His will for me. He will help me to make the best of it! If you're a pray-er, will you pray that I continue to listen & follow his leading?

Second, I am going to kick my Tupperware business into high gear! I can replace my "pretty good" corporate salary with Tupperware earnings in just a few months. It's what I would rather be doing anyway!

Girlfriend Gifts

My co-leader Pat & I wanted to give something special to the women of our Bible Study Group to celebrate the end of a particularly meaningful study. Here's what we came up with. This is easy AND delicious!

Find yourself a few pretty dessert plates. If you're not trying to match them, your local thrift shop is a good place for these.

Then find a few candlesticks, small cocktail-type glasses (use your imagination), for the base. Epoxy the base to the bottom of the plate. This was Pat's part.

Make a couple dozen Strawberry Cake Ball Truffles, and wrap them up in cellophane & ribbon. This was my part.

We met at a local restaurant for brunch, where we deocrated the table with them. Our girlfriends loved them!

Family Farms or NO Family Farms? That is the question...

Okay, so you're not really into the Real Food, Traditional Food, Nourishing Traditions lifestyle, yet.

Hmmm...

Do you ever purchase food from a Farmer's Market? Do you even care that you are able to do so?

Do you want to continue to have the choice to buy from local farmers rather than industrial food (I use the term "food" loosely) operations where cruelty & sickness abound?

Or, for that matter, do you wish to have the choice to buy your food from ANY place you choose?

Do you care that in many cases, the "foodlike substances"* that you purchase in your supermarket bear no resemblance to their traditional forms; that they have been genetically-modified to withstand tons of fertilizer & weed control to the detriment of any nutritional benefit?

Do you care that huge operations are feeding antibiotics and growth hormones to animals destined for our food supply and are still involved in recall after recall; yet they are allowed continue to produce sick food?

Does it bother you that small farmers who carefully manage their herds/flocks to be healthy, and produce food in the same manner as our great-grandparents did, are harassed and put out of business by our government?

Learning to Eat Well

About six months ago, I took "weight control" a class at a local Wellness Center. It was a real eye-opener for me. What I learned, while a serious departure from conventional nutritional wisdom, resonated deep within me. The class was definitely 6 weeks of "aha!" moments.

I was introduced to the Weston A. Price Foundation & to Sally Fallon Morell and her cookbook (much more that that) "Nourishing Traditions - The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats ". As I read this book, I felt as if a weight (pun intended) had been lifted. It all made so much sense. Why hadn't I put it all together before?

You see, many facets of the NT (Nourishing Traditions) lifestyle were familiar to me. I was already trying to shop & eat locally and seasonally. I was buying organic produce, at least most of the time. I always had an inkling the nutrition was the key to health.

Now, a few of months into my conversion to the NT lifestyle, I am still learning, every day. From pastured eggs to grass-fed meat & butter, it's been an adventure! (raw dairy is next!) And, I am loving it! I posted HERE about my first batch of sauerkraut and HERE about making cream cheese. I have really enjoyed cooking with real, traditional foods. And spending time at the Farmer's Market, getting to know my local farmers has been a blast!

I'll be posting more about this my new way of cooking and eating and the resulting benefits I gain. That certainly is "refining life", isn't it??

Before I Stow The Fall Decor...

I have been really bad about taking photos recently! I don't know why, but I forget until an event is over, or I've put the decorations away... Old age?

If you have been a faithful reader of Refining Life, I have a favor to ask. Please read this post, all the way to the end. Indulge me. I believe this is really important!

This is going to be a difficult post to write. First, I am angry. Then, I am sad. And last, I'm frightened. This usually means that I write way too many words trying to not only tell my story, but somehow also convey my emotions. I am going to try to be as succinct as I can. But don't look for a short post here...

I had grandparents who worked a small "Truck Farm" (See note at the end.) of what was probably about 2 acres, though it seemed gigantic to me as a 5 year old kid. My grandma had a roadside produce stand and sold the most delicious corn, tomatoes & strawberries. It was the money she earned and the food she grew that sustained them. Since, although my grandpa worked, he drank most of his earnings. (He was a great, fun-loving grandpa, not a great husband, I suspect.)

There were chickens for eggs & meat and always, there was fresh milk. Grandma must have bartered with a neighbor, since I don't remember a cow. Pretty idyllic place for a kid, right? Yes. yes it was. Just think, I was 5 years old then, almost 62 now. I ate and drank unprocessed, REAL FOOD at my grandmother's table & lived to write about it! Imagine that? Now, just as I am finding my way back to TRADITIONAL FOODS, I may be in danger of losing the right to purchase them?

Farmers who are committed to continuing the tradition of sustainable, family farming are being harrassed by our government! Their livelihood is threatened, their inventory confiscated.

"Not in MY country", you say? Sorry to burst your bubble...read on!

The Fungus Are Among Us!

We have lots of Oak and Almond trees on our property. After it rains, we often see "fairy rings" of toadstools around a tree or two.

For some reason, we had dozens of them appear in the last couple of days! One tree in particular has so many toadstools it looks like they're (Fairies) planning quite a shindig after the sun goes down!

I'm thinking I might just see them if I check out there about midnight! What do you think?

I wonder if they've invited the gopher who lives in that hole?

There are several clusters like this in the ring.

The cows aren't nearly as excited about this as I am!

I think this is the "throne" for a Fairy Queen or Mr. Toad, one or the other.

I'm imagining the party-goers will arrive like this.

What's new?

Wow! I haven't posted in over a month. I haven't visited any of my favorite blogs either. Not that I haven't wanted to, there's just been so much going on around here I haven't hardly had time to breathe!

My husband is STILL having dizzy spells. The doctor STILL does not know what is causing it. If we aren't satisfied that some progress on a diagnosis is being made after his appt. next week, we're demanding a new doctor!

Then, my full-time job is crazy-busy! I work for a large, multi-national corporation in the Electronic Manufacturing Services industry. I am part of a Business Development Team, specifically, I'm a Proposal Coordinator. I am able to work from home which has its advantages for sure. The disadvantage is that I can work from home, ANY time of day or night. Since we support all time zones globally, well, you get the picture.

I also had to make a trip to Austin, Texas a couple of weeks ago, for my job. I loved Austin, and it was good to be in the same room with my co-workers again. However, business travel is never really fun for me! That week seems lost forever.

With my husband's illness, church activities, my job, Tupperware, and now the Holidays all either on my plate now or looming large, the blog has suffered. Deciding that "Refining Life" is important to me, a necessary, creative (maybe?) outlet and way to communicate with a group of dear friends, was easy. Finding the time to keep up is more of a challenge. But, I WILL make time, at least a couple of times a week. If it's important, I'll find the time, right?

Now I did manage to get some fall decorating done just in time to start thinking of Christmas! :o)

I'm posting several photos. My "good" camera isn't working for some reason, so these shots are taken with my cheapie. They aren't great, but I'm sharin' them anyway!

Do You Love a Good Mystery?

If you're a mystery buff, I have a good one for you! It is also very important that we solve this one. It has baffled learned men and women for several years. However, I have the utmost confidence in blogdom. I'm pretty sure there will be some very interesting theories and perhaps, even a super sleuth to solve it!!

It started about 4 years ago. My 67 year old husband called me from work, saying he felt terrible. He was dizzy, "sweating like a pig" (I've heard that pigs DON'T sweat, by the way. But I digress...), and he had intestinal issues".

I jumped in the car and by the time I arrived at his job, I was concerned enough to insist he go to the emergency room. Once there, they did all the tests that they felt were necessary based on his symptoms, and declared that they couldn't find anything out of order with his heart, brain, blood sugar, etc., and sent us home with "Might be some virus". Right. He continued to have these spells occasionally for months. His personal physician did more lab work, checked his ears and another CAT scan.

By chance we were discussing these "spells" in a group of friends, and a girlfriend mentioned that she had a relative who had the same symptoms. It turned out to be his blood pressure medicine, Lisinopril.

Ah Ha! Guess which blood pressure medication my husband was taking? Yep, Lisinopril! The doctor changed his medication...no more spells. All's right with the world.

Fast forward to the present. About 6 months ago, the spells came back. Same symptoms, same diagnosis. Changed BP meds again, but this time, spells continue. Grrrr! Doctor has again done all the tests done previously, and can't find anything. At this point, he is taking no BP meds and the spells continue. One change has occurred. The spells instead of lasting long hours and knocking him out for 2 days, are of much shorter duration and he is usually feeling well again after a few hours.

He has been to the doctor numerous times and has lost confidence that they can figure this out. I believe he isn't making enough noise! The last visit, his doctor said "at least your dizzy spells aren't life threatening".

IF HE DOESN'T KNOW THE CAUSE OF THE SPELLS, HOW CAN HE BE SURE OF THAT? Yes, I'm yelling!

So here are the facts & a few clues. Let's hear your theories. I'm willing to try anything....

DH is now 72 years old, is generally very healthy, and is taking no meds except Zyrtec for allergies
His symptoms are dizziness, profuse sweating and intestinal distress during the spell, followed by a time of feeling "really tired".
He has had a couple of CAT scans, fasting blood work and blood chemistry labs
Been to a ENT to check for inner ear problems. (He does have hearing loss and has hearing aids which he won't wear.)
Eating when he first feels dizzy sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't.
Soda, and an occasional beer is his hydration preference. He is now getting at least 4 glasses of water because I take it to him and say "drink".
He is active. Works in his shop and on his tractors every day.

Because the spells have become less severe and shorter, and the fact that it has only been about a month since he quit taking the BP meds (doctor approved), maybe that's it. I don't think so. I believe there is something else going on.

I am putting you, the Family of Blogger Investigators, on the case!

Been Gone a Few Days

I've just spent the last 4 days where I grew up, in the San Francisco South Bay Area. I was at my one of my sister's homes. We've had a couple of rough weeks in our family.

On August 22nd, my brother-in-law, Ron, lost his 8 year battle with leukemia. The very next day, Ed & I had to put down our 14 year old Lab Mix, Dusty. These were very sad days...

But, this weekend was time to celebrate Ron's life with family & friends. As is the way with our family, we gathered as many of us who loved Ron as we could find, and ate, drank, told stories, looked at photos and an amazing memorial video, put together by one member of his girl's basketball team. Many tears were shed, and laughs were had. Healing has begun.

The bro-in-law in whose home we stayed is a wonderful gardener. I have taken loads of pictures of his garden to show you in a couple of days. I wanted to leave you with a photo of the table in their backyard pavilion. This greeted us as we arrived. Don't know why, but the color in the table cloth & place mats looks brown. It is really more purple. I just loved his creativity! What do you think?

P.S. Please excuse his cigar...bleech! I didn't even see it until I looked at the photo..

I Love Fall Mornings!

Yesterday was blustery. There were plenty of grey clouds, lots of wind and even a light shower in the evening.

Happily, I woke up this morning to a cool, sunny, beautiful Fall morning! I took my coffee onto the back deck and watched my neighbor's cattle. There are several calves, and they run & hop & head-butt with great joy! I was thoroughly entertained.

Took a couple of photos to share. This is the view from my back deck to the east. The cows are about 100 yards away.

What Do You Think?

My girlfriend & I spent Saturday shopping for fabric for her living room. She has already purchased gold silk drapes & plaid fabric for for relaxed roman shades. She wants to upholster two bergere chairs, similar to this one at Ballard Designs, which will sit near the windows. Her thought was to cover them in a solid fabric, thinking that the plaid was to prominent to use another pattern.

Bolderdash, I say! I helped her choose 3 fabrics that "might work", to quote her. She likes them all, she's just not yet comfortable with the mix of patterns.

I've included pix below. What's your opinion? Do you like the idea of adding another pattern" Which one do you favor? I'll keep you posted...

BTW, the third combination is my choice. I think it almost "reads" as a solid and still adds some playfulness to counteract that serious plaid!

From the Frame Shop...

I thought you might like to see what's been going on in my frame shop. My girlfriend Patti & I framed some prints and fruit-packing box labels for ourselves. We are our own best customers! *Ü*

This first print is mine. It is called "The Emporer's Horse". I think it is destined for my sitting room.

Next are two fruit-packing box labels that Patti will hang in her den which is right off the kitchen.

Finally, this small "poster" from Santa Cruz, CA Beach & Boradwalk is for her son-in-law. He purchased it years ago, and it's been in a drawer ever since. It's going to be a birthday gift!

Lately, I've been spending a lot of time looking at gardening books, magazines and web pages. It is beginning to cool down here and my thoughts always turn to the garden this time of year.

Our vegetable garden was a mostly a bust this year. Every cucumber was bitter, the ground squirrels (we have at least a hundred of them) got every tomato, and my zucchini produced not one squash! Can you believe it? Zucchini, which I am usually giving away by the basket full, DID NOTHING!

The corn is ready and the few ears we have tasted are good. The squirrels don't seem to like the eggplant, so perhaps we'll get a few of those. Basically, I'm just finished with the vegetable garden for this year...

On the bright side, I have developed some plans to rework the landscaping around the house. I've been trying to turn what is basically California pasture land into an English garden. NOT WORKING, the grass always wins! So, I am going to defer to Mother Nature and try to do thing "her way"!

The photos below show one idea I intend to incorporate on a blank wall between our two back decks. Don't you love it? A trellis similar to this will provide interest without giving the grass any place to grow! There, take that you darned grass!

I realize that a structure like this will require maintenance to stay looking nice, but I am willing to do that. Maybe the whole garden needs to go vertical?? Ha!

I'm Back!

Got into Sacramento Int'l Airport @ 9:50 pm last night. We were home by 11:30 pm, after dropping off a girlfriend.

Jubilee was awesome! It is fun to be recognized for your achievements and to see what the future holds for Tupperware!

Disney World was so cool. (Actually, it was drippin', sweaty hot, but you know what I mean) I can't wait to earn my WOW Trip. I'll have to decide between Hawaii or Disney world, one week , all expenses paid! Tough choice, eh? I have lots to "show & tell". I'll probably do that over on Today's Organized Kitchen blog, starting in a day or two. I need to catch my breath and do laundry. LOL!

In the meantime, here's a video that was used at Jubilee to launch a line of new products. It is really fun!

I'm leaving Wednesday morning for Orlando, FL to attend Tupperware's "Party to the Future" Jubilee. We are staying on the Disney World property, and I've never been there! I'll come back with all the news about new Tupperware for Fall & the Holidays!

No Secret Recipes!

As I am learning more about real, traditional foods & cooking, I have spent time hopping from blog to website & back again, meeting all sorts of fabulous folks! I came across Drew Kime by following a link from another blog. I am so glad I did!

One of the first things I read at "How To Cook Like Your Grandmother", was a post about No Secret Recipes! I hooted when I saw it. Drew has put into print what I have always thought about this subject. I could not have said it better, even if I tried. So, just click on the picture below and you'll be taken to Drew's post. Do yourself a favor and don't leave without looking all around his website & blog.

Do You Sew?

Clothing that is...

I used to sew a lot of my own clothing. Haven't made anything (to wear) for years. Curtains, slipcovers, pillows and crafty things, has been the extent of it.

I think one of the reasons is the lack of fabric stores. It used to be so much fun to browse the small local shops, which have all but disappeared. Oh sure, we have the giant stores, but the amount of dressmaker fabric is VERY limited for some reason. No one is sewing their wardrobe these days? We also have a several really fun quilt shops, but unless you dress entirely in calico, they don't provide much in the way of "wearable" fabric, except for an cute blouse or peasant skirt.

For some reason, I am still fascinated with sewing patterns anyway. I belong to Club BMV which allows me to purchase patterns from Butterick, McCalls & Vogue at a discount. I pay, not much, to belong - I'm nuts! I receive email notifications of new patterns at least every couple of months. I click into the "club" to see what's new & dream of having the time and skill to fashion a complete wardrobe for myself!

Today, as I was browsing in the Vogue section, I noticed a suit pattern in the "Vintage Vogue" section. This pattern is circa 1947, and I am in love! This may be the one pattern that pushes me over the top into sewing heaven (or hell). I am not convinced I even know how to sew such a complicated garment. Where will I wear it?

Hmmm.....is it really too vintage for 2010? I'm actually just one year less vintage myself!

What do you think? I think I'll need a hat!

Adventures in Fermentation

I am learning a lot from the Nourishing Traditions cookbook! I have a list of recipes about 2 pages long that I want to try. This morning early, I made creme fraiche. I wanted to try it since it is so easy. But I also wanted the whey which is a by-product of the recipe to make sauerkraut. Whey is used extensively in the NT book.

According to Jenny at The Nourished Kitchen Blog, "Fermented and cultured foods are rich in probiotics, enzymes, vitamins and minerals." We all need more of these! Besides, I love sauerkraut.

I took photos as I made my creme fraiche. It is still sitting over the strainer, tied up in cheesecloth, releasing the last of it's whey goodness. I'll post about the finished product in a few days.

The sauerkraut process was fun! The photos that follow show the process and the results, so far. It has to ferment for a while...*Ü* You can find a recipe in the NT cookbook or on The Nourished Kitchen Blog.

First, I cut 1 medium cabbage in thin shreds. If you don't have your grandmother's cabbage shredder, a knife is best. The food processor may cause too much juice to be extracted from the cabbage.

Then, add 1 tbsp. of sea salt, 1 tbsp. caraway seed, 4 tbsp. of whey (from my batch of creme fraiche).

Next you pound it! And I mean pound, for 10 minutes, with a wooden "pounder" (who knew there was such a thing?) or meat mallet. As you can see, the juices begin to release from the cabbage and it is about half the volume of the before pounding photo.

This is the sauerkraut packed in a glass quart jar, ready to sit and ferment on the counter for 3 days. After that it goes into the refrigerator for cold storage. It is edible after 3 days, but improves with more time. I'll taste it tomorrow, then give it a couple of weeks to ferment into something really delicious!

Edited to add: I tasted the sauerkraut today (after 3 days on the counter) and it was delicious! I put it in the fridge and will leave it another week or so. Then it's pork & sauerkraut for dinner!

Sometimes, you need shade, but not necessarily a big table. I know there are all kinds of heavy iron, stone & wood bases for umbrellas. But this is just so pretty! It adds more life and softness to this little destination. I'd love to use this idea in my garden.

What ideas are you dreaming of for your outdoor spaces? I'd sure like to collect more for my inspiration folder!

Nourishing Traditions

Whew! It’s been a while since I posted, hasn’t it? All I can say is that I’ve been crazy busy!

Between my full-time job, my Tupperware “career”, church, family & friends, I meet myself coming and going sometimes. Not complaining. I’d rather be busy, than bored. But I am ashamed to have neglected this blog for so long.

Life is good, I am happy to say! It’s not without up & downs, but I am very content. One reason is that I am feeling better, more energetic. I am 3 weeks into a new way of cooking and eating based on the principles of Weston A. Price and “Nourishing Traditions”, by Sally Fallon.

The subtitle of Nourishing Traditions; “The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats” appeals to me so much, since I have long believed that we are being fed “a bunch of hooey” when it comes to nutrition. Humankind has survived for a couple of thousand years, at least, on a traditional, natural diet. I am convinced that we know intuitively what is good for us, if we will only listen. The need to eat REAL food, raised locally and sustainably, is another passion of mine. You're sure hear more about that in the future.

So, I have my first batch of Kombucha fermenting in the darkest corner of my pantry, and this afternoon, I am making my first homemade sauerkraut! (I’ll be sure to take some photos to share later.)

I will write occasionally about my successes (and probably a few failures) as I learn this lifestyle, and spend time in my kitchen.

Flowers - Indoors at Filoli

When my friend & I visited Filoli a couple of weeks ago I took loads of photos in the gardens, some of which I'll post later. I also took some of the flower arrangements and potted plants in the house. These are done by the volunteers & docents, and are always from the Filoli gardens, so they are seasonal.

This beautiful asymmetrical arrangement was in the ladies' receiving room.

Here's one of two matching arrangements that flank the fireplace in the grand reception room.

This unusual plant was in the kitchen.

I loved it, so I took down the name.

Now, I can't find it! Anyone have an idea what it is??

This arrangement of peonies in the swan container (I want!) is on the counter in the butler's pantry.

I love this example of Ikebana. They offer classes in this form of Japanese flower arranging at Filoli.

This angel wing begonia is in the garden house.

Isn't this one just delicious! (Also in garden house.)

I would love to fill my home with arrangements! I think I'd better get out to the garden & plant more flowers!

A couple of weekends ago, my best girlfriend & I spent the weekend in San Francisco and the surrounding area. We saw a production of Peter Pan, which was spectacular! The "flying", the special effects were so wonderful. When this touring show comes to your city, DON"T MISS IT! No photography was allowed, so I have no pictures to show you, sorry. Friday night we stayed at the Hyatt Regency at Embarcadero Center. The tent theater for Peter Pan was erected in the Ferry Park on the Embarcadero property, so it was a 3 minute walk from the hotel entrance. Even if the show weren't so close, we both love this hotel! It has very interesting architecture, partially a pyramid shape, which is evident on the inside as well as outside. Standing in the hotel's Atrium, you can see all the way up to the top floors. It also has an 18th story circular private restaurant/bar which provides a 360 degree view! On Saturday morning, we had our complimentary breakfast in the Regency Club. (Our show package gave us a room on a private floor & access to the "club", La-Te-Da! I'm posting photos of the circular room & the views below.

A Dovecote

My best girlfriend & I spent last Friday night in San Francisco. We had tickets to see Peter Pan, which was wonderful! More about that part of the trip in an upcoming post.

Saturday morning, we headed down the peninsula to Woodside to one of my favorite spots, Filoli. Last summer, when I was there, I took a ton of photos of both the house & gardens. You can see those posts here: House and Gardens.

As we walked to the entrance of the home, I noticed something new! As I got closer I could see that the structure was covered in succulents! (I hope Julie over at A Succulent Life sees this!)

Then, to my delight I discovered it was a dovecote! It houses two pairs of white doves. Both pairs were nesting in their little boxes inside, so I didn't get a photo of them.

Wouldn't you love to have one of these in your garden? I sure would...

I wonder if I could talk my husband into building this?? Hey, Honey....

A New Wallpaper Book!

My close friends all know that I LOVE wallpaper! I'd have a house full of it, if I could convince my husband to help me hang it all. As it is, I only have one papered wall in the entire house, in our dining area.

My favorite wallpaper is from Thibaut Wallpaper & Fabrics. I visit their website at least once a week. Their room photogarphy is eye candy for me. I can actually spend a couple of hours looking through their photos, just dreaming.

Yesterday, I took a quick peek and found A NEW COLLECTION is being released! That made my day!

The new book/collection is called Shangri-La. Let me tell you, it is beautiful! Here's Thibaut's description:

Real Food

I am very blessed to live in Placer County, California! Our county has an agricultural heritage which is being nurtured and kept alive by many individuals, family farms amd orchards and local restauramts. We are lucky that we truly can "eat locally" here in our part of Northern California. Year-round Farmer's Market's make it possible to enjoy fresh meat, fish, and poultry as well as all kinds of seasonal produce. I am taking full advantage of it, making major changes in the way we eat.

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter and I attended the release party for a cookbook titled "Real Food". The cookbook follows the authour Joanne Neft & local Chef Laura Kinney from their weekly visit to the Farmer's Market, purchasing local, seasonal food, to the dinner table, creating & serving delicious, healthful meals with what they have purchased. Every week for one year, this duo amazes! As far as I can see, there is not one meal I wouldn't be thrilled to serve & eat!

I personally can't wait for the week of July 6th, when the menu is "Fig Fantasy"! (ILOVE FIGS!)

So, I've been MIA, playing hookey, taking a break, incommunicado...one of those euphemisms for "I disappeared", and in a most ungracious manner at that!

Why is that you might ask?

First let me say it had nothing to do with any of my blog buddies. I love you all!

In fact, I have been sneaking peeks at your blogs all along! Your posts bring much joy and entertainment into my days!

No, the problem is me!
I could blame it on Seasonal Affective Disorder which I have had for years. This year has been the worst! I know it contributed to my funk, but to tell the truth, the real reason is, I got BORED! With my own writing, my own photos, everything! I didn't enjoy it and I couldn't imagine that you did either...

Well, the sun is shining again, there are new things happening in my life, and I'm ready to give this another try. I hope you'll come for a visit occasionally. I'll try not to bore us all to tears. Deal?
